DISCOVERING SOUTH AMERICA: A JOURNEY THROUGH CHILE, ARGENTINA & URUGUAY

Five hundred years after Columbus, I finally discovered America for myself—South America, that is.
Recently, I had the privilege of traveling with Collette on an unforgettable journey through Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay. Accompanied by a group of 23 travelers, including nine of my own clients, I experienced a part of the world that exceeded every expectation. From beginning to end, Collette delivered an exceptional travel experience, with seamless logistics, outstanding hotels in prime locations, and a tour director whose passion and expertise brought every destination to life.
Traveling during South America's spring season proved to be ideal. Comfortable temperatures, blooming jacaranda trees, and vibrant city parks created the perfect backdrop for exploration.
Santiago: Chile's Modern Gem
Our adventure began in Santiago, Chile's dynamic capital city. Nestled beneath the snow-capped Andes Mountains, Santiago immediately impressed us with its modern skyline, spotless streets, and sophisticated atmosphere. The city blends contemporary architecture with rich history, offering visitors everything from bustling markets and charming neighborhoods to world-class dining experiences.
Many travelers are surprised by Santiago's cosmopolitan feel, and I was no exception. It was a wonderful introduction to Chile and set the tone for the incredible experiences that lay ahead.
Mendoza: A Wine Lover's Paradise
Crossing into Argentina, we arrived in the renowned wine region of Mendoza. Surrounded by vineyards stretching toward the Andes, Mendoza produces nearly 70% of Argentina's wine and is considered one of the world's premier wine destinations.
The region's famous Malbec wines are reason enough to visit, but Mendoza offers much more than exceptional vintages. The stunning mountain scenery, relaxed atmosphere, and warm hospitality make it a destination that captivates visitors from the moment they arrive.
For wine enthusiasts, it is truly paradise.
Buenos Aires: The Paris of South America
No destination on our itinerary captured our hearts quite like Buenos Aires.
Often called the "Paris of South America," the city enchants visitors with its grand boulevards, elegant balconies, European-inspired architecture, and vibrant café culture. Every neighborhood seemed to tell a different story, from colorful La Boca to the refined streets of Recoleta.
Yet what makes Buenos Aires truly unforgettable is its passion; and nowhere is that passion more evident than in the tango. To visit Argentina without experiencing tango would almost feel like a crime, so our group eagerly embraced the opportunity. After a private lesson, complete with attempts at mastering the dramatic gancho, we ventured to a local tango club for an evening unlike any other. There, couples ranging in age from their 60s to nearly 100 years old glided effortlessly across the dance floor. Their elegance, connection, and joy were mesmerizing. Watching them, it became clear that tango is far more than a dance. It is woven into the cultural fabric of Argentina—a celebration of life, romance, resilience, and community.
It was one of the most memorable moments of the entire journey.
Uruguay: The Switzerland of South America
Our adventure concluded in neighboring Uruguay, a country often referred to as the "Switzerland of South America" for its stability, beauty, and high quality of life.
Here, we experienced estancia life, enjoying rolling countryside, exceptional wines, world-renowned steaks, and genuine hospitality. The slower pace offered a perfect contrast to the energy of the larger cities we had visited and provided a relaxing finale to our South American exploration.
Why South America Should Be on Your Travel List
South America surprised us at every turn. Its cities are sophisticated and welcoming, its landscapes breathtaking, and its cultures rich with tradition and warmth.
What began as a trip to explore new destinations became something much more meaningful. From the modern streets of Santiago and the vineyards of Mendoza to the passionate rhythms of Buenos Aires and the tranquil countryside of Uruguay, every destination left a lasting impression.
Most importantly, sharing these experiences with my clients made the journey even more rewarding. Travel has a remarkable way of bringing people together, creating memories that last long after the journey ends.
South America didn't just impress us; it captured our hearts.
If South America has been on your travel wish list, I'd love to help you discover it for yourself.
